Activities for Kids

The Portland Highland Games is a family friendly event that includes sights, sounds and experiences for people of all ages. There’s tons of music and activities, booths and performances that everyone can enjoy. For children, we highlight these activities to check out:

Youth Athletics and Games (Upper Field) – 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
A special area on the Upper Field is designated for young Highlanders and their families! This ever-popular Childrens’ Games and Activities are brought to you by the Girl Scouts. All competitors receive a participation medal. No registration is required. You can drop in at any time, between 9:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. A parent must be present while their child is participating. Entry fee of $5 covers all activities and supports the Girl Scouts

Ceilidh Social Dance (Gym) – 3:30 – 4:40 p.m.
We invite you to come and join us, take advantage of this unique opportunity to learn the fun social dances traditionally danced at a Ceilidh. Everyone is welcome to join in and all ages are welcome—novice to experienced alike.

Kids’ Fun Run (Main Field) – 4:30 p.m.
If your wee-highlander is inspired by the Kilted Mile, we have a fun run for any child under the age of 13 right in front of the grandstands on the main field. No pre-registration is necessary, just show up at the Kilted Mile Tent on the North end of the main field between 4 and 4:15 p.m. to sign up and get your number. The run will commence at 4:30 p.m. and every child will receive a prize.

Sheepdog Demonstrations (Main field – SE Corner) – 10:30, 11:30 and 2 p.m.
Border Collies are a favorite of the PortlandHighland games. Come see their demonstration as they move and herd sheep around a course. If the sheep are too tired, unattended children may be used. (only partially kidding)

Pizza Box Bodhran (Gym) – 1 – 2 p.m.
Have you ever wanted to learn how to play the bodhran? Don’t know what a bodhran is? The bodhran is an Irish drum. We may not have drums enough for everyone, but we do have pizza boxes. Come learn some Irish rhythms with the musician of The Golden Bough as they teach you the basics… on a pizza box
